Early Years
Our Early Years Department offers a first introduction to a structured learning environment, where children are encouraged to use their imagination, initiative, and intuition to work towards becoming independent, respectful, and creative learners.
At Edison International Academy, Aspire, we aim at achieving this with the implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, which consists of 7 Areas of Learning:
- Communication and Language
- Physical development
- Personal, social, and Emotional Development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Our Preschool classrooms cater for children of three years of age, and seek to provide a structured and balanced, yet interesting, stimulating, and above all, child-centred learning environment. With our dedicated and experienced teachers, our youngest learners are encouraged to discover the world around them by acquiring skills that will enable them to go confidently through their every day at school.
In Reception classrooms, all children learn to read and write, and build on the skills they have acquired in Preschool. Children will continue to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world through a variety of exciting topics, and during ‘carpet time’ where they are encouraged to share their own opinions and experiences with the whole class.
Our learners in the Early Years are assessed against curricular and age-adequate learning goals throughout the school year.
Arabic and Islamic Studies are part of the curriculum in our Early Years Department in both, Preschool and Reception classrooms. For our Qatari learners, this provides a sense of belonging to and value of their own, local culture. For our expat learners, it instils a sense of respect and appreciation of our host country’s culture and customs.
As part of learning and exploring, the children also take part in different activity days, through which learning is made fun and enjoyable by engaging them in a variety of hands-on activities. Colour Days are celebrated, and children come to school dressed in the colour of the week; they also bring along with them an object of the same colour for a Show & Tell activity and make a colour craft to take home. Children enjoy these these days tremendously; they are presented with ample opportunity to speak about themselves and their experiences, but also learn to listen to the experiences of their peers.
The Qatari culture and Islamic values are celebrated with a variety of Qatar National Day activities and Eid celebrations. The children also have movie days, pyjama days, superhero days, international days and even picnics to further enhance their understanding of the world around them.
We value parent involvement and parents are always invited to contribute different ideas in addition to joining in with the children’s academic related activities. Enthusiastic and consistent parent involvement not only adds a special flavour to our different activities, it also enhances and positively impacts children’s learning experience.
